Day 1 : Refuge Vittorio Emanuele

We leave for the Valsavarenche valley on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, and climb to the Vittorio Emanuele refuge, situated in the Gran Paradiso national park at the foot of the north-west face of the Ciarforon.  Leaving our gear at the refuge we head onto the glacier to do some ice training with crampons and ice axes.  We return to the refuge for the night.

Day 2 : Climb the Tresenta - refuge Chabod
Early start around 7am to climb the Tresenta.  We go back onto the glacier at the foot of the north face of the Ciarforon to rejoin the start of the west arret which we will climb to the summit at 3609m.  This climb is a mixed route of rock and snow, and offers a perfect initiation to mountain terrain.  We climb down the same route back to the refuge, and after a deserved break we leave by the path which traverses the flank of the mountain, arriving at the Chabod refuge (2750m).
Time : 6 to 7 hours

Vertical ascent: + 850 m

Day 3 : Ascent of the Gran Paradiso (4061m)
Leave at 5am to start our climb up the glacial moraine.

Put on harnesses and crampons and rope up to cross the Lavecciau glacier as far as the summit bergschrund.
Leave axes and crampons at the foot of the rocks to climb to the summit.
Magnificent view of the Alps, and the Viso to the south of Monta Rosa.
Descend via the same route back to the refuge.
With children it's possible to spend a second night in the refuge and descend the next day.
Time: 7 to 9 hours
Vertical ascent : + 800 then - 1600 m.

The ascent of the Gran Paradiso (4061m), is one of the most beautiful easy climbs of the Alps as it encompasses everything the mountains are about.  Even the walk up to the refuge is a sublime experience, winding through pine forests on footpaths only an Italian would know how to build!  Then appears the magnificent glaciers, and then snow.  Suddenly the magnificent north-west face of the Gran Paradiso appears.  You will receive a warm welcome at the refuge, with excellent food and wine.  Avoid the temptation to over-indulge however!  The ascension the next morning, although without any technical challenges will require a good physical condition and a clear head.

This Alpine paradise is the perfect introduction to the high mountains.

Jour 1 : Walk to the Vittorio Emanuele refuge. Glacier excercises

Here is an excursion perfect for your first steps in the mountains, to discover the alpine glaciers, and climb your first 4000m peak.  Although technically quite straighforward it requires a good level of fitness as the total vertical ascent is over 1300m.

If your children enjoy walking and want to discover the high mountains, this is a perfect opportunity to share this experience with them.
